FMO Tapiola is the highest wooden office building in Europe, with five levels and a total floor space of 13,300m2. It was constructed in 2005 for the insurance company Tapiola, and is situated in Espoo, Finland.
Finnforest Glulam, Kerto® and ThermoWood® was used throughout the entire construction process. The architect sought to innovatively combine wood with other materials to create a modern and pleasant working environment.
Aside from the lift wells and exits, which are constructed using concrete, the entire frame of the building uses Kerto® laminated veneer lumber (LVL). More than 500 supporting structures were required, including Kerto® LVL columns and beams.
The exterior facade is clad using 2,200m2 of split glulam plank. Sun deflecting facade slats are made from ThermoWood® and the facade panels are of Finnforest Colorwood.
Interior partition walls and glass wall surrounds are constructed using Kerto® LVL. The suspended ceiling is made using ThermoWood® and the sliding doors are also made from Kerto® LVL and coated with common alder veneer.
Winner of the Wood Award 2006, the building also received grade B PromisE environmental classification. Only 10% of Finnish office buildings have reached this grade.
