Bound and bonded surface dressings are used on paths, pavements, driveways and roads to provide anti-skid, slip-resistant, porous or decorative properties. They can also be used for demarcation and repair purposes in pedestrian and light traffic areas.
The systems use a mixture of binders (often resin) and gravel or other aggregates. The difference between bound and bonded surfacing lies in the application process.
With resin-bound surfacing, the aggregate and resin are mixed together before application to the substrate.
With resin bonded surfacing, the aggregate is scattered onto a pre-applied resin base.
For areas subject to heavy wear and higher traffic/speed levels, asphalt surface courses are commonly used. The asphalt can be polymer-modified for additional wear resistance, frost resistance and flexibility.
